Background: As a young child of 7, Near was orphaned, though his exact circumstances are largely unknown to the public. He was shipped from foster home to foster home, orphanage to orphanage, until one realized his innate genius and sent word to The Whammy's House institution in Winchester, England, whereupon he was immediately accepted and which he made his new home. However, Near arrived emotionally scarred and damaged, a quiet child, his hair white from some untold trauma, preferring to keep to himself and confide in no one.

At The Whammy's House, Near quickly rose to become the top student in the place, though not from studying hard or the like, but from sheer natural talent. A coveted spot to hold, the student who was #1 would gain the honor of becoming the successor of L, the greatest detective in the world. However, L was also required to formally choose a successor as well, and when he did not automatically accept Near, it was rumored that both the #1 and the #2 students would be picked and would have to work together, or that there would be some sort of contest to decide who was most worthy.

Before such a contest could occur, L died, while working on the Kira case, the only case he risked his life for. Word was sent to the Whammy's House, and Roger, the caretaker there, called for Near and the #2 child, an impulsive, headstrong boy called Mello. Together, he informed the two that L had died, without choosing a successor. He suggested they both work together. Amicably enough, Near agreed, but Mello stormed out of the orphanage, his hatred for Near and grief for L blinding his mind as he left, never to return. Nothing has been heard of Mello since.

At the age of 15, the customary age for orphans of the house, Near departed and went to the United States to present his findings on the Kira case. His demeanor and findings impressed the president, who in turn gave him the power to set up a new branch of the FBI: The SPK, a taskforce designed soley to capture Kira, with Near at the head.

Now, however, Near's found himself far, far out of his comfort zone, stranded alone in a hotel without his toys, wondering just whaat kind of sick test this is...

Personality: A quiet and introspective child, Near has never fully grown up. Though he possesses a superior intellect far above those of the average adult, his emotional growth is highly stunted, if it even exists at all. He often speaks in a manner that is completely detatched from the emotions and worries outside world, a monotone that would inform you that his mother had died the day before without so much as a waver or flicker of an eye.

Near often can be found playing with a puzzle or toys; quietly, to and for himself. If no toys exist, Near will find something to entertain himself with, making toys out of a rocks, wood, anything, just needing something to use to express himself creatively and to keep his hands busy with.

Near also takes near-sadistic pleasure in testing things. If curious or intrigued by something, Near is likely to do something unethical and morally shocking just to see if his hypothesis is correct. In addition, Near takes little pity on the unintelligent and unmotivated of the world. He will not go so far as to publicly denounce them and therfore seem in accord with Kira, his greatest enemy, but in the quiet depths of his heart, his predjudiced, stained with his own struggle of his past, whispers to him and makes him dismissive of others' plights.
